Your Makeup Wardrobe ‘Must Have’ Piece #1 ~ cream/gel eyeliner

Tory Burch 'Slim Brigitte' Cosmetics Case found at Nordstrom

Love pink flamingos. (Tory Burch @ Nordstrom)

Regardless of the size or type of makeup bag you own, there are some makeup ‘must haves’ you should squeeze in there. Your closet has classic pieces (the LBD, a great pair of jeans that make your butt look fab, the black blazer, a great white  T-shirt) so why shouldn’t your makeup bag have them too? Simple and easy items that can go from casual to dressed up.

The first piece you need: a dark shade of gel/cream liner. Why this format of liner you ask?

  • truly the best of both worlds of pencils and liquid liner
  • easily glides on with a brush (if you can hold a pencil you can hold an eyeliner brush ; )
  • smooth, creamy texture let’s you smudge it to soften or go smoky
  • no pulling or stretching the eye to apply
  • get it into the roots of the lashes, no more ‘skipped’ spaces like pencils do
  • make thin or thick lines
  • get the dramatic look of a liquid, such as the cat or winged eye
  • may have one or more perks; long-wearing, smudge-proof, water-proof

It should not be pretty packaging, a fabulous brand name or a good price that makes you buy an item… every makeup product must deliver results for it to have valuable makeup bag real estate.

Maybelline lasting drama gel linerMaybelline Lasting Drama gel eye-liner is just one brand that I own and use but I always recommend it because it gives great results, has a fab price ($10-$12 CAD) and the tool needed is included. Plus it’s water-proof and long-wearing. If you haven’t tried a gel or cream liner this is a good place to start.

Video for $plurge or $ave? ~ Summer Beauty Essentials

Hello Gorgeous Gals,

Here is the CTV Morning Live TV segment that features yesterdays blog post items.

I confessed admitted to a personal choice in the video after saying I wouldn’t (I’d squeal under a bright light in a cold interrogation room LOL)

So here’s the rest of my picks:

  • Clarins Suncare ($34 CAD)for myself  but I would take the L’Oreal Ombrelle ($13.97 CAD) for the kids, as you use way to much every summer to pay top dollar for it ; )
  • Guerlain Terracotta 4 Seasons Bronzer Blew the budget on this one ($82 CAD) but the matte finish and multi-shades truly made it an ‘adjustable’ (use light or dark shades depending on season/level of existing tan) year round item. You can always add a hi-lighter on top to give a subtle shimmer.
  • L’Oreal Voluminous waterproof, I don’t like to pay high prices for mascara and for an item that I may use a handful of times during the summer, that would be $$ down the drain! It’s was under $7 CAD.
  • Maybelline Baby Lips, feels great on, love the subtle tint and can’t beat SPF 20, the price (under $7 CAD)  made it easy to own several shades and always have one on hand.

Cream (gel) liners are the Rock n’ Roll love child of pencil and liquid liners sharing the best of eyeliner DNA with the world. You can achieve the preciseness of a sleek line, like a liquid. It can also be used to create thin to thick lines or be smudged easily for the coveted smoky eye. The versatility of this formula makes the cream (gel) liner a winner for me! Trial & Review – Maybelline 24HR Color Tattoo cream shadows

I love eyeshadows, and willing to try new ones any time. So on a trip this week into Wal-Mart I came across the new Maybelline Eye Studio Color Tattoo 24HR Cream Gel Shadows.

Bad to the Bronze (top left)

The price is wallet friendly at $6.49 CAD and a fashionable collection of 10 shades. I bought a universally friendly shade, ‘Bad to the Bronze‘ a taupe-y metallic. I don’t need 24hrs of eyeshadow wear but hoping that it offers at least all day stay put-no creasing wear and put it to the test on 2 days for a review.

Maybelline recommends applying it with fingers..not my fave way, I prefer a flat shadow brush w/synthetic bristles. The shadow was very creamy, spread easily and the color impact was great, even layered.  The lid fits snugly, so hopefully no dried out pot of shadow for a while.

Day 1 Trial-used brush to apply on completely bare lid. Nothing on top of it either. Just the color with mascara. I was working on a photo shoot all day so I don’t check or touch my own makeup. When I returned home about 5pm, it had some mild creasing to it. (I don’t have ‘oily’ lids)

Day 2 Trial  -used a lid primer (Kat VonD in ‘skin’) again nothing over top. At work all day. Checked in at about 8pm, slight creasing (same as the 5pm check on Day 1) Ok so there was a bit of creasing, but if you read the site carefully it doesn’t say 24hrs ‘no creasing’ wear it says “formula glides on without creasing”
• Ophthalmologist-tested.  Safe for sensitive eyes and contact lens wearers

'Fierce and Tangy' shade (shown)

THE REVIEW:  I really like the texture and shades offered. For the price of just $6.49 I say YES…go ahead give a try and you can add a couple to your makeup bag. Think I’ll go for the ‘Fierce and Tangy’ shade of orange next  (the  Hot shade for the upcoming Spring season)

Jennifer Love Hewitt (from Instyle online)

Simple Bronze Smoky Eye: (Similar to Jennifer Love Hewitt- left)                                                     Apply Maybelline’s ‘Bad to the Bronze’ 24HR cream shadow to eyelids (not past crease/contour fold) and under lower lash line. Use a brush made for eye contour gently blend into the crease of the eye. With a sharpened black pencil liner (dark brown will work) into the lash base top and bottom, smudge it a little bit. Apply 2 coats of mascara to lashes.
