Nothing But Rock! The Bear 106.9 Billboards ~BTS Video~

One of the hottest commercial shoots in the city is for The Bear 106.9 radio stations billboards, and it was shot again by Derrick Rice and the exceptional talents at Union Eleven Studio. Check out the BTS (Behind the Scenes) video and peek into what happens on set,  also captured by Union Eleven.

When I say hot, I mean it on so many levels…a hot morning in July (amen for studio A/C) to the talented team of experts of photographers, bbandm media+advertising, hair/makeup team of Fiorella, Stephane and Kait from Rinaldo Hair Designers and Spa (uber popular downtown location, that I LOVE getting to work with) and the professionalism of the six MIM models.

It was a great morning, even if Kait and I did have to turn the bathroom into our makeup dept. LOL  That’s the fun of behind the scenes. Check it out!

The end results…traffic stopping ; ) Especially when it’s on a roadside billboard!

I still get a kick out of seeing the billboards around the city.

Ciao, Until Next Time

Video for $plurge or $ave? ~ Summer Beauty Essentials

Hello Gorgeous Gals,

Here is the CTV Morning Live TV segment that features yesterdays blog post items.

I confessed admitted to a personal choice in the video after saying I wouldn’t (I’d squeal under a bright light in a cold interrogation room LOL)

So here’s the rest of my picks:

  • Clarins Suncare ($34 CAD)for myself  but I would take the L’Oreal Ombrelle ($13.97 CAD) for the kids, as you use way to much every summer to pay top dollar for it ; )
  • Guerlain Terracotta 4 Seasons Bronzer Blew the budget on this one ($82 CAD) but the matte finish and multi-shades truly made it an ‘adjustable’ (use light or dark shades depending on season/level of existing tan) year round item. You can always add a hi-lighter on top to give a subtle shimmer.
  • L’Oreal Voluminous waterproof, I don’t like to pay high prices for mascara and for an item that I may use a handful of times during the summer, that would be $$ down the drain! It’s was under $7 CAD.
  • Maybelline Baby Lips, feels great on, love the subtle tint and can’t beat SPF 20, the price (under $7 CAD)  made it easy to own several shades and always have one on hand.

Top 4 Summer Beauty Essentials ~ $plurge or $ave?

Hello Gorgeous Gals,

I’m so excited to bring my $plurge or $ave posts to life by way of  a new series of beauty segments to CTV Morning Live, starting this morning.

I’ve paired products from within the same category, share similarities, but are opposites in price range so there is something for everyone’s wants, needs and budget…I just narrow the search for you (saving time & frustration) It’s up to you to check out each item further before you decide on what/when to $plurge or $ave!

SPF for the Body

Clarins Sun Care Cream SPF 20 ($34 CAD – Shoppers Drugmart) They have a fab reputation with their skincare and their SPF collection is just as great. They boast several items and levels of SPF. I’ve used it for a few years with positive results everytime.  The L’Oreal Ombrelle SPF 60 ($13.97 CAD Walmart) may say its for kids but they have a few levels of SPF, waterproof, fragrance free formulas, great for anyone with delicate skin.

Bronzing Powders for the Face

Guerlain’s Terracotta 4 Seasons Bronzing Powder (in 2 shades – $82 CAD – Shoppers Drug Mart) is a matte version, great when you don’t want shimmer and can be used year round as you dip into dark or light sections as needed…more ‘sunkissed’ than fake tan. Rimmel Match Perfection (2 shades $7.98 CAD- Walmart) is pretty darn close to being fully matte as compared to all the other Rimmel bronzers. The trouble with shimmery bronzers is that they give more hi-light than color and start to look cheap when over applied (regardless of the brand)

Waterproof Mascara

One thing I have learned over the years….never mess with a gal and her mascara ; ) I don’t suggest using a waterproof mascara for everyday as it can dry out & cause brittle lashes over time. If you need staying power try the water resistant ones first. However when a waterproof one is needed, be it for a wedding or a pool/beach party then you need to head straight for the mascara geniuses. Lancome Hypnose Mascara waterproof  ($31 CAD – Shoppers Drugmart) Lancome mascara have a cult following and Hypnose is one of the popular ones…get volume and waterproofing!    L’Oreal Voluminous waterproof ($6.72 CAD – Walmart) is of course the ‘sister’ brand to Lancome, so there is good reason why all the formulas are similar ; ) Just saying! Voluminous has been around forever cause it works. (reminder to read the package to make sure it’s the waterproof one you picked up)

Tinted LipBalms with SPF

Dior Addict Lip Glow ($35 CAD – Shoppers Drugmart) Yes it’s a luxury brand, but it moisturizes, glistens, feels great on, has several shades, SPF 10 and pretty to pull out of your purse. Maybelline Baby Lips (under $7 CAD – Shoppers Drugmart) Highly moisturizing, SPF 20 and 5 shades (1 clear) stock up with multiple shades, great for the beach bag and you won’t cry if you loose it.

What are your favourite Summer Makeup Essentials?

What do you prefer to $plurge or $ave on?

I’d love to hear what product pairs you’d like to see in future segments/posts.

BB Creams ~ The Beauty Industry’s New Must Have (pt 1)

OK ladies, if you thought tinted moisturizers were the bomb then look out because here come the next wave of the beauty industry’s must-have item The Beauty Balm or Blemish Balm affectionately called BB creams. I think it’s at the very least a must try item see the secret below…Ahem…I own 3 tubes. (Clicking a picture will take you to find more info)

Garnier's Miracle Skin Perfector - $21 CAD 75ml Find at Shoppers Drug Mart. I have this one in med/dark. I like the texture, hydration and the radiance it gives.

So the story goes that BB Creams came from German dermatologists that used them for healing skin after laser skin surgery because of the soothing and skin-regenerating properties of the formulas. Then South Asian actresses loved the formula and well gals, we know that a good beauty innovation is hard to keep quiet. They’ve have finally made their way onto European and North American shelves.  These darlings are multi-tasking formulas that are a cross between skincare and makeup, an all over face product that is simple to use. Wonderful for all ages. Perfect for teens starting to wear makeup, women who have shied from foundations in the past and of course all the busy gals. Superb to lighten up your makeup bag for travel as well.

BB creams can take the place of several items in your beauty routine at a fraction of the price and time used to apply all the others. Some are the same shade as regular moisturizers, while others have a tint, with some brands going a step further and making several shade ranges for a variety of skin tones.  They are lovely textures, can contain a blend of several active ingredients and nutrients in a blend of everything from anti-aging, vitamins, SPF, moisturizer/hydrators, oil absorbers, anti-shine, light reflecting mineral pigments and the list goes on.

Too Faced Tinted Beauty Balm SPF 20 $42CAD 45ml @ Sephora. I love their concealer and was excited to try this..I now own 2 shades!!

How to shop for a BB cream – shop them the same way you shop for your skincare. Based on your skin type, what your skin needs now, this may change from season to season.  What skincare functions do you want/need: anti-aging, SPF, oil absorbing, firming, moisturizing etc. Do you want it with color? What is the skin finish: matte, semi matte, satin, radiant or dewy. (so far the ones that I have tried cover more than a tinted moisturizer but less than a foundation) What is your budget? Prices vary, I’ve seen $20 to $60+. All these questions help narrow down brands and formulas. (Over the next few months you’ll find even more leading brands creating their own versions)

SECRET: I often shop at Sephora, as after finding a product(s) someone will make up to 3 samples for you so that you can actually try before you buy.  Just ask nicely and don’t get greedy ; )  Some of the items that have an SPF in their description online may have it covered up on their packaging here in Canada.

Smashbox BB Cream SPF 35 $50CAD 30ml Exclusive to Sephora. 4 shades. I tried this as a sample first and glad I did, loved the texture and satin finish, however it absorbs oil well and I'm dehydrated now so it will be better for me in the hotter months.

Boscia BB Cream SPF 27 - $46 CAD 50g This is in the category of 'Blemish Balm' Has a slight tint, oil-free. Popular brand for all it doesn't contain like parabens, petrochemicals etc.

Next: How to get a 5 minute or less makeup look using a BB Cream and no tools…OK, yes your fingers count as tools for this one ; )

Until Next time ~ Melody xo

Friday’s Fun & Frivolous…with ‘Melody’

Friday’s posts are meant to celebrate the upcoming weekend of fun. It’s also a way for me to post about other things I’m interested in.  Today I thought I’d  play up my name, indulgent? Maybe a little…but it’s my post ; )

I have a deep love for the LBD any time any where and what better way to express that love but with a one shoulder, low back sexy ‘Melody‘ dress from talented Canadian fashion designer  Rachel Sin.

The name…it’s not a coincidence. I have had the extreme pleasure to work with Rachel Sin several times as the makeup artist on campaigns and look books (that’s also my makeup work with Chloe in the picture). Rachel is not just talented, but warm, kind and generous behind the scenes…the dress is named for me. She designs, she names…we see the collection on set before it is named. What an honor and surprise to see it after and dang she picked the perfect style, I also have my very own.

The beautiful and glowing Rachel Sin and I in the studio early morning prior to working on Delaney’s (the model) hair/makeup for the Spring/Summer 2012 lookbook shoot.

I normally don’t like yellow as a color, somehow lately it keeps presenting itself to me and I’m starting to warm up to it. This Elie Tahari skirt has my name on it…purely coincidence of course (found it in my tablet version of People Style Watch mag) and again, there is the yellow calling out to me. Love the cut and the texture and dare I say it…liking the yellow.

found in People StyleWatch Magazine

Lets go a little bad-ass with some old fashioned Doc Martens with a twist…’Melody Glitter‘ boot. Found it at Revolve clothing . Oh what the hell, wear them with the skirt or dress above, pair it with a piece of skull jewelery and don’t forget to rock it with a “who gives a shit” attitude and truly bring out your inner badass!!

Until Next Time ~ Melody xo
